I need to get a new computer for the family. We've gone through 3 in the last 4 years...I'm don't know...
I don't know much about computers. I use them mostly for emailing, shopping, downloading pics off of my digital camera and burning the on dvd's, and downloading some songs. My oldest daughter uses them for school papers, downloading music, chatting, and burning cd's, my 2nd daughter downloads music, burns cd's, and plays games and webkins, my youngest daughter does webkins and some kind of barbie innernet toy, and my husband mostly surfs and plays solitaire. I don't want an expensive computer, but I do want one that would work for all of us. The las 3 we had just quite...took forever to get on, shut off in the middle of using, all kinds of stuff. Any suggestions on a brand, what all we need to have on it, and what we're doing wrong to all of the "dead ones" we have????
i would suggest windows xp or vista (windows vista has reportadly had problems with SOME cd burning types) if you dont mind the constant upgrades.
at least pentium 2 and around 2gghertz. a cd drive 16x minimum would be the least you could get away with.
If your daughter has a real hardcore gaming attitude you will want one with at least a graphics card of 64 mgb i suggest nvidia geforce as it is cheap if you buy/install seperately. it would be around $50-$80 bucks more. Otherwise dont worry.
get Ram of at least 500mgbs
memory/harddrive of around 80-120 gbs
good internet
make sure you get a firewall and some avg, norton and or panda software. Free stuff on net
you wont need an overly good computer but just make sure you maintain and regurlarily delete unused stuff to keep it working well.
you could get one for around $800-$1500 australian and it would probably last for atleast 3-5 years. Just make sure it is not second hand and is maintained regurlarily and it should last that long.
it will run all software, especially cd software and will no/little manual fixing. (After about 3 years vents should be cleaned.)
DELL are rerported to sometimes catch fire, especially their laptops due to overheating so if you get one make sure you dont leave it running overenight. Also some software does not run (probably stuff your family wouldn't use. Dell isn't that good for gaming usually, but it depends how good a one you get or if you overclock.
temp internet files are easily deleted if you have mozilla which you should get as it is safer and better, simply press the keys ctrl, shift + delete at once and tick all boxes including cookies, this will help system efficiency and delete some problem causing files.
