Spraying with water base paints at home?
I was wondering if anyone has any tips for painting cars with voc water base paint at home in the garage?
I have worked as a car painter for almost 20yrs and with the arrival of waterbase latley and the demise of solvent base paint,my only choice for doing homers is to use water base.
At work,in the oven, each coat flashes off in round 5 mins and needs a constant airflow around it(i use a desktop fan on a stand for this)in order to dry quickly.
A paint rep explained it(using the fan)like this, hanging your clothes out to dry on a warm day with no brezze, and hanging them out on a warm day with a brezze, the latter shall dry quicker.
Any tips for home use? My main concern is dirt in my base coat and it doesnt de-nib very well.
Solvent base was really more superior for doing homers with but that day has been and gone unfortunatley.
i think if you are going to be painting in your garage,a small hand held infared lamp will help we use one on a stand which i have made, and for air movement i use a hand held blower with a diffuser which is designed for drying WB.i use these if i am doing a bumper corner or a small blow in,rather than fire up the booth for a small job.As for your concerns about dirt in your base coat i use mirka abralon pads to nib out the base coat 600 to 1000grade work well(dry).i guess prevention is better than cure i would just make sure your garage is spotless before painting and line with some poly plastic to keep dust down.you are a braver man than me i wouldn't want to do paintwork in my garage especially with 2k lacquers.Good Luck
