Wetting the Bed - 3 Helpful Hints
Anyone contending with a bed wetting problem knows the shame and frustration that are often associated with it.
In this article I will offer proven solutions to help you as you help your child get over this rough spot in his life. One very important aspect is to take action quickly. Don't let this stubborn habit take over by thinking, "He will outgrow it." Yes, he may outgrow it, but on the contrary it may go on for years. Don't let your child get to the place where he has a negative perception of himself. So take action quickly, start implementing the solution today.
The first thing to do is cut out all drinks an hour before bedtime. As an adult you may be able to have a drink before bed but a child has a smaller bladder that needs to be emptied more often. In other words, their ability to "hold it" is not like that of an adult.
Secondly, always have your child use the bathroom right before bedtime. This is going to take a concentrated effort on the parent's part. You won't be able to just send them off to bed on their own; the bedtime routine must be established. If you're going through the same routine every evening they will get accustomed to it.
If you've been consistent with these steps and your child is still waking up wet you may have a deep sleeper in which case you may benefit from a wetting bed alarm. A wetting bed alarm is simply a device with a moisture sensor attached to an alarm, which assists in waking up the child the second they start to wet the bed.
I baby-sat for a little girl who constantly wet the bed. Her mother was convinced something was seriously wrong but it was clear to me she was a very deep sleeper. I could make all kinds of noise around the house and she was the only child that would not wake up even from a daytime nap. Reluctantly her mother bought a wetting bed alarm and after a couple of weeks she began waking up dry.
Whatever steps you have chosen to do, take action quickly. If you have a deep sleeper the problem will not just take care of itself.
So how do you find a good deal on a wetting bed alarm?
To find an on-line store that offers a one-year warranty on all wetting bed alarms visit the Wetting Bed Alarm Blog. It has a great selection and it will save you the time of having to research them yourself.

What do I do for an 8 year old son who wets the bed approx. 3 days a week?
My son just turned 8 this week. I still have to buy pull-ups for him because he wets the bed 3-4x a week. I have tried nothing to drink after 6, eliminating the pull-ups, waking him up throughout the night to go to the bathroom and none of it has worked. I know there are costly items you can buy such as alarms when the bed is getting wet but I would really like him to kick this habit on his own. He is a very active boy, only 47 lbs and is in perfect health.
If your child is a heavy sleeper, there may be a need for your doctor to prescribe DDAVP (Desmopressin). Some research has indicated that children who sleep heavily may have a decrease in ADH (antidiuretic hormone) during sleep. DDAVP is an synthetic antidiuretic hormone available in both pill form and as a nasal spray. It is a treatment NOT a cure. Your child could outgrow the problem or not. Speak with your pediatrician and possibily get a referral to a pediatric urologist.
