The Miss Universe Pageant: Where Beauty and Fashion Collide
The 58th Miss Universe beauty pageant has always successfully put together 84 of the most beautiful women from countries around the world. Last August 23, 2009, the pageant, held at the Atlantis Paradise Island in Nassau, Bahamas. Again, it became one of the most viewed spectacles of the year. Millions of people worldwide tuned in as beautiful ladies paraded themselves in flattering swimsuits and evening formal wear. It was a sight that could turn a man's head and make girls go green with envy. However, beauty pageants, superficial as they may seem, also possesses depth in its cause. It is not merely the showcase of good looks and stunning womens formal wear; it is the representation and glorification of the influence of women in a multitude of ethnicities, industry and practices. To summarize, the Miss Universe contestants compete to become global ambassadors for women's problems and concerns, including health and reproductive issues.
The 2009 Miss Universe winner was Venezuela's multicultural beauty, Stefanía Fernández. It was not a long shot win though as she was one of the crowd favorites. Stefania looked absolutely gorgeous in the evening gown competition, donning an elegant, off-shoulder, ruffled bottom red gown which had beautiful beadings on top. Complemented with her exquisite beauty and intelligence, it was inevitable that she would be crowned the queen of the night. After the pageant, the 19-year old didn't waste time in traveling around the world, carrying out her responsibilities as the new Miss Universe.
As naïve as it may sound, young girls consider the Miss Universe representative as a role model; this because of her amiable demeanor and smarts. Hence, when Stefanía makes an appearance in public places, little girls flock around her to take pictures or have her sign autographs for them. A few of these may even aspire to be her when they grow up.
But it is important to take note that beauty pageants are judged using a variety of criterions. So beauty and intellect can only get a contestant so far. Grace, poise confidence and the performance wear worn also helps out a lot in winning a specific category - for instance, the National Costume category. For this category, Miss Venezuela had a Victorian-inspired nude gown, which was detailed with pearls. The gown's train was made of purple and white feathers, and she also wore a hat with the same set of feathers and pearl. To add, she accessorized the whole ensemble with huge chandelier earrings and a long, white parasol. Needless to say, a winning look that took the judge's breath away.
The beauty and intelligence of Miss Venezuela has truly captured the hearts of the people. And judges didn't have any second thoughts as to giving her the title of Miss Universe 2009. The long days of heavy training, of trying on numerous formal wear and of withstanding the pressure of the whole pageant process has finally paid off for her as Stefanía Fernández is now the reigning Miss Universe.
Now, one does not need to be a beauty queen to look and feel like one. Ladies can also have their own costumes and beautiful gowns, without having to spend a lot of money. There are a lot of boutiques and dress shops who provide ready-to-wear gowns and costumes. For proms, galas and other special events that require you to wear gowns or any other kind of formal wear, online specialty stores are always available for fast and easy transactions.

What are the birthdays of American Girl Dolls?
My daughter suddenly decided she wants to celebrate their birthdays and I figured I'd indulge her. I need to know the birthdays of all the Historical Characters (Kaya, Felicity, Elizabeth, Addy, Kirsten, Josefina, Nellie, Rebecca, Kit, Ruthie, Molly, Emily, Julie and Ivy. I already know Samantha's is May 26). Any help would be appreciated!
