In doll collecting, as in the collecting activity of any type of item, finding rare pieces usually means they will cost a lot more, since they unique, one of a kind and in many cases one of a kind.
The definition of “rare” may vary from seller to seller, rare dolls may be referred to as this since there were very few made, and it will be painstaking work to find another one in good, collectible condition. Other uncommon items might be considered that way since they are working dolls (i.e. Thumbelina dolls) which move, talk, or twist their body parts which are so old it is unlikely to find other working ones.
A perfect example of rare dolls are those made by Ideal, who had rotating faces, each face would have a specific emotional expression, so in play, if she would laugh or cry, the doll holder would only need to twist her head.
Rarity of dolls also depends on the amount of years it was made (the fewer years meaning the rarer the doll) and the circumstances under they were made (dolls made right before, during or after war times are sought out for with greater zeal.
