Blending the Art of Tradition and the Craft of Culture in Bangkok
Cheap Bangkok hotels are the best places for tourists who want to explore Thailand. One of Thailand's many attractions for the visitors are the traditional Thai style houses. If culture can be defined as a design for living then, architecture is also the reflection of the culture of a nation. The two main factors that influence the traditional architectural design of the Thai houses are the climatic condition and the religious beliefs of the people.
Almost all of Thai traditionally built houses use stilts to elevate the houses. The logic behind this was to protect the house from flooding during heavy rains and during the ancient times from wild animals. During other parts of the year the bottom area under the house is used for accommodating livestock or just to sit around during daytime.
Thai traditional houses are built with wood or bamboo and usually built in a day. The woodwork is prefabricated and they are assembled by a builder. In northern parts in places like Chiang Mai it has been observed that the Thais built the house taking into account climatic conditions and the resources that are available in the country.
If one looks at modern architecture which is more influenced by the West, the houses might be very hot on the top floors. But in the traditional houses that is not the case as they have taken into consideration the climatic factors and designed it accordingly.
In Southern Thailand the architecture is very similar to other the other parts. But what make the houses in the south different are the stilts which are not placed on the ground directly but they rest on stone slabs. The reason for this is to prevent termite attacks and also to prevent dampness of the soil that would weaken the stilts. The ceiling height is reduced as the roof is lower but the elevation of the house is increased giving more space under the structure. Roof of Thai houses are of 4 types-Manila, Panyah, Kabranoh, Gabled. There are two primary kinds of designs, Ruan Kruang Pook the tied house and Ruan Kruang Sab the wooden house. Celebrating the Thai lifestyle with a wealth of culture and tradition, the heritage of Thailand includes colorful and charming festivals that have attracted innumerable visitors from all over the globe.
Watch a Cultural Spectrum of Festivals in Thailand
One of the important festivals in Thailand is "Chulalongkorn Day" or "Piyamaharaj Day" which falls on 23rd October every year. It is the day when Piyamaharaj or known as King Ram V died. The Thai's believe that by paying respect to him his spirit would bless them with prosperity and wealth. Hence his picture is found in almost all houses and on this day they lay a wreath on his statue outside the Royal Plaza in Bangkok.
Food comprises to be a major part of the Thai culture and the Vegetarian Festival is celebrated in October to preserve the culture of Thai cuisine. Restaurants and hawker stalls turn vegetarian and serve only vegetarian food to celebrate this ten day Chinese Festival.
